🏛️ Historical Context: Montenegro as a Safe Haven
Following the tragic events of the 1917 Revolution and the Russian Civil War, the Balkan region — and specifically the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (later Yugoslavia) — demonstrated immense European solidarity. Montenegro became a critical sanctuary for thousands of Russian refugees, military officers, intellectuals, scientists, and doctors who were forced into exile during the “White Exodus.”
Key coastal and cultural centers such as Herceg Novi, Kotor, and Cetinje integrated entire Russian communities. Notably, Herceg Novi housed a prominent military hospital under General Wrangel’s administration, while the local archives still whisper the stories of names that shaped both Russian and Balkan history. For decades, these families preserved their culture, faith, and memory on Montenegrin soil.

⚠️ The Modern Tragedy: The Language Barrier and Broken Ties
Today, we are facing a critical historical turning point. Over a century has passed since the first wave of emigration. The great-grandchildren and descendants of these Russian emigrants now live as native Montenegrins, Serbs, or citizens of other European countries. They speak their local languages, but the vast majority can no longer read or speak Russian.
As a result, unique family relics — unpublished personal diaries, rare books printed by emigrant publishing houses in Belgrade, Paris, or Berlin, and handwritten memoirs — remain locked away in private home libraries. They risk being lost forever, not because they are forgotten, but because the younger generation physically cannot read the words of their grandfathers.

🎯 Our Mission in Montenegro and the Balkans
The Uniting Generations (Uni-Gen) platform expands its international archival work to Montenegro to solve this exact problem. Our mission is built upon three main pillars:
    1. Field Research and Archival Rescue: We actively seek out surviving private libraries, diaries, and rare publications across the Adriatic coast. Our goal is to digitize these brittle paper artifacts before they turn to dust.
    2. Advanced OCR & AI Integration: Using cutting-edge Optical Character Recognition technologies, we process vintage typography (including pre-reform Russian orthography) to turn static page scans into live, searchable digital text layers.
    3. Breaking the Language Barrier: By optimizing our digitized library for seamless modern AI translation tools, we make it possible for a descendant in Herceg Novi, Paris, or London to read their family’s authentic 20th-century memoir in English, Serbian, or French with just one click.

🇪🇺 Institutional Cooperation and European Integration
As Montenegro dynamically harmonizes its cultural and legal landscape with European Union standards, the preservation of multinational migration history becomes increasingly vital. Uni-Gen is establishing a dedicated non-profit organization (NVO) within Montenegro to work side-by-side with local institutions.
We aim to cooperate with:
    • The State Archives of Montenegro (Državni arhiv Crne Gore) in Cetinje and Podgorica.
    • The Historical Archive of Kotor and local cultural centers in Herceg Novi.
    • European cultural heritage funds (such as Creative Europe) to secure grants for systematic, high-tech digitization of Balkan-Russian archives.

🤝 Share Your History: Open Call for Collaboration
We believe that no historical voice should be lost to time. We warmly invite historians, genealogists, Slavic studies departments, and — most importantly — direct descendants of the First Wave emigration to join our mission.
If your family possesses pre-war books, memoirs, photographs, or letters from the post-1917 migration era in the Balkans, please contact us. We will professionally digitize your materials free of charge, returning the originals safely to you while making their digital souls available to your children and the global community.
